Bringing Immersive Brand Merch
to Helldivers 2

Originally published on April 3, 2024

Introduction

Hi there! I’m Chechin, a Stockholm-based Visual Concept Designer with over 25 years of industry experience, specializing in developing visual concepts for leading global brands such as Samsung, Google, Absolut Vodka, Klarna, and more.

I’m the designer behind an unexpected “mini-wave” in the Helldivers 2 gaming community. The visual concepts I’ve created for Helldivers 2 have now gathered +7M views by now and +16M interactions, including reuploads and social media shares.

This article traces the journey of how a playful in-game term became a viral creative endeavor, and the underestimated business potential of creative merchandising.

Background: The Game’s Cooperative Satire

Helldivers 2 arrived on the gaming scene on February 8th 2024, quickly carving out a place at the forefront of the gaming zeitgeist. Picture this: a game where you and your buddies dive into alien worlds in the roles of Helldivers, an elite class of soldiers tasked with spreading Managed Democracy throughout the galaxy, with some serious firepower.

The hype was well-deserved for this game by Arrowhead Game Studios, the small Swedish game studio tasked with developing this game by Sony. Surpassing all expectations, Helldivers 2 has captivated global audiences, boasting a concurrent player count of 800,000 just one month after release, dwarfing the modest goal of 150,000 players initially hoped for by its creators.

The game offers a unique twist on the conventional gaming experience; players are all on the same team, as Helldivers, striving together in a universe that boasts exaggerated satirical humor and tongue-in-cheek propaganda about spreading democracy. The game echoes the satirical essence of the 1997 sci-fi film “Starship Troopers“, which adds a layer of lore and amusing depth to its narrative.

The humor in the game, coupled with the collaborative gameplay in which all players are on the same team, fosters a tight-knit, vibrant, and engaged community, which sets the stage for unprecedented creative exploration.

Creative Process

The inception of the creative journey I found myself in was serendipitous. It sparked while I was learning about the game’s lore and kept hearing the recurring in-game voiced line, “How about a nice cup of Liber-tea!”. The quote picked my interest. I decided to morph this catchphrase into something more visually “tangible”. I wanted to translate the game’s humor and thematic elements into a series of conceptual fictive products that would fit into this absurd militaristic world. As an example, the aforementioned ‘Liber-tea’, albeit clever, didn’t have any visual representation in the game. This gave me the idea that I could invent visual merch for the numerous in-game inside jokes, memes, and satiric quips. That’s how it all began, from Liber-tea, this idea has now expanded into a product line with 50+ items and counting.

Here are some examples of the products I conceptualized, each with its backstory and appeal:

  • Liber-Tea
A tongue-in-cheek product, envisioned as a fluorescent green tea made from alien bugs.
  • L.E.G.O. (Liberation Expert, Galactic Operator)
A meticulously detailed figure designed for ‘mission planning’.
  • Tactical Unit Shield
Safe sex, satirized as a vital part of ‘operational safety’ blending real-world utility with in-game lore.
  • Strategic Command Seat
An essential piece for any player’s command center, complete with an attachable cape for those moments of tactical brilliance.
  • Scented Candle
Evoking memories of the “lost soldiers” of Malevelon Creek, with scents of motor oil and cold steel.
  • Tactical Floatation Support Gear
Water wings acknowledging the in-game peril of water.
  • Freedom Fuel Bar
A protein bar with a quirky twist, hinting at its extraterrestrial ingredients.
  • Swarm Crunch
A darkly humorous snack, imagined to be made from in-game bugs, likely crafted by four Helldivers wielding flamethrowers.

Visualizing fictional merch quickly, and quite unexpectedly, struck a nerve with the game’s community. The response was beyond my wildest expectations.

Community Reactions

The community’s response was astounding. Fans were both amused and amazed. They didn’t merely appreciate the designs; they embraced them. Many wanted to own these non-existent products and had a hard time believing that these visuals weren’t AI-generated; that a single person had crafted them. It was rather interesting to see how disappointed some fans were when they realized these items weren’t available for sale. The outpour of comments reflected a mix of humor, admiration, and even a sense of longing:

Somehow the marketing for this is light-years ahead of multi-billion-dollar corporations.

  • “You just did the work a NY ad firm would’ve charged $50,000,000 for.”
  • “Well done, these are brilliant, hilarious and expertly carried out.”
  • This is insane, did you do this? I hope you don’t mind that I shared them with Pilestedt [CEO of Arrowhead].”
  • “Hands down the best post I’ve seen on here so far mate, totally epic”
  • “… why the heck aren’t these real?”

Even the game’s developers reached out, commending the initiative and highlighting the close-knit relationship between fans and creators for this game.

The Viral Life of Visuals

In an unexpected yet thrilling turn of events, the visual concepts I crafted for ‘Helldivers 2’ took on a life of their own. Beyond the initial engagements, these pieces transcended their original context, being shared across a multiple social media platforms and Discord channels. They became woven into the fabric of meme culture associated with the game, illustrating the unpredictable reach that digital content can reach in today’s interconnected world.

The organic spread of these visuals not only amplified their reach, potentially multiplying the views into numbers far beyond initial estimations but also granted them a form of digital permanence. As these images circulate through communities, detached from their origins yet impactful, they underscore a fascinating aspect of digital content – its ability to live, evolve, and inspire, long after it leaves the creator’s hands. Most sharers may be unaware of the creator or the original context, yet the essence of the work continues to engage and entertain, demonstrating the unforeseen ways in which visual content can persist and proliferate in the digital age.

Community Adoption

The imaginative merchandise I conceived for ‘Helldivers 2’ resonated so deeply with the community that it spurred a wave of collaborative creativity. A YouTube news show dedicated to the game embraced these visuals, ingeniously incorporating them as ‘sponsored segments’ in their format, blurring the lines between the game’s universe and our reality. Voice actors, fueled by their passion for the game, lent their talents to produce mock ‘TV commercials,’ further enriching the narrative I had crafted. Additionally, dedicated journalists delved deeper into the lore, conducting interviews with me in my newly acclaimed role as the ‘Democratic Merch Officer’, allowing me to extend the story and connection to the merchandise even further.

This collective adoption showcases the unique bond the community has with the game, illustrating the power of well-crafted merchandise to not only engage but also inspire collaborative innovation between enthusiasts.

Immersive Merch: A New Paradigm

The idea of ‘Immersive Merch’, as I call it, evolved throughout this project, where each item inspired by the ‘Helldivers 2’ universe, was crafted with a profound understanding of its community. These products offer fans more than mere physical items. They provide an enriched experience and a tangible connection to their beloved universe. This approach not only deepens fans’ appreciation for the world they are engaged with, but also demonstrates a powerful tool for brands across industries to enhance the experiences of their communities.

Immersive Merch thoughtfully expands and, most importantly, respects the fans’ connection to a brand’s universe — be it a game, movie, or any other creative medium. It amplifies a fanbase’s bond. In the case of Helldivers 2, it extended the community’s camraderie (almost) into the real world.

Purpose of the Experience

I began this creative journey to demonstrate to myself and others that merch can be playful, immersive, and unique.

I wanted to shake up the merch industry, and urge it to challenge clients and push boundaries. We need to think beyond the standard fare of logo-laden items and create merch that truly resonates with any community, drawing them closer to the things they cherish.

Conclusion

The statistics of this campaign speak volumes, painting a vivid picture of what happens when merchandise is done right.

With my posts garnering over +7M views, and a conservative estimate of +16M reached thanks to shares and reuploads, the numbers are a testament to the true potential that lies within well-crafted merchandising. This campaign has proven that, when merchandise is thoughtfully designed and contextually relevant, it stirs more than interest. It can create demand out of thin air. Such merch doesn’t merely exist; it engages, delights, and deepens the bond between brands and their audiences.

While it’s true that some of these imaginatively conceived items may not be feasible to produce for various reasons, they still hint at what could be possible. To those who don’t belong to the in-group, these products might seem trivial or overly whimsical, yet they embody the heart and humor of their respective communities.

This case study illustrates that with a bit of daring, a deep understanding of context, and a touch of creative courage, even the silliest-seeming items can be brought to life, capturing the imagination of fans, and fostering a vibrant community ethos. Let this be a guiding principle: merchandise that resonates on this level isn’t just another line item—it’s a unique opportunity to fulfill a demand, enrich the fan experience, and offer something truly memorable.
